Twenty Years Old and Champion of the World: Antonelli Finishes Third in Mexico City and Takes the Title

Max Verstappen won the race by eight-tenths of a second. Kimi Antonelli won everything else — third place in a red-flagged Mexico City Grand Prix made the Mercedes driver, at 20 years and 68 days, the youngest Formula 1 world champion in history, and Italy's first since 1953.

Twenty Years Old and Champion of the World: Antonelli Finishes Third in Mexico City and Takes the Title (Dallas Watch News)

Formula One has a new youngest champion, and it is not close. Kimi Antonelli finished third in Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix to clinch the 2026 drivers' championship with four rounds still to run, at 20 years and 68 days old — more than three years younger than Sebastian Vettel was when he set the previous record in 2010. Antonelli needed only a ninth-place finish to make his lead unassailable no matter what anyone else did. He drove like a man who had not read that part: starting fourth, he passed Charles Leclerc with a late-braking move on lap 48, after a 33-minute red-flag halt, and took the chequered flag in tears over the team radio. His lead stands at 119 points, 380 in total, built on nine wins and 16 podiums in his second season.

The race ahead of him belonged to the two men who defined the era he just ended. Max Verstappen won for the third time in four races, seizing control at the lap-28 pitstop cycle by leapfrogging Leclerc and then holding off polesitter Lewis Hamilton by 0.799 seconds at the finish — Verstappen's sixth victory in Mexico. The afternoon had everything except calm: two safety cars, multiple crashes and that long red-flag stoppage with 25 of the 71 laps left. The podium at the end of it held 12 world titles between three drivers: Hamilton's seven, Verstappen's four, and now Antonelli's one.

The historical weight is Italy's. Antonelli is the first Italian world champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953 — a 73-year wait — and only the third Italian champion ever, after Ascari and inaugural winner Giuseppe Farina. He follows Jacques Villeneuve and Lewis Hamilton in winning the title in his second season. Mercedes, the team that signed him as a 12-year-old, leads the constructors' championship by 126 points over Ferrari. Four races remain on the calendar, and every one of them is now a fight for second place: Verstappen's win lifted him to 261 points, two ahead of Hamilton. The championship is settled. The era, on Sunday's evidence, has already turned.
