Early Voting Passes 50 Million Nationally — Nearly 5 Million More Than All of 2022

More than 50.5 million Americans had voted early by Saturday morning, the University of Florida Election Lab reports — already millions beyond the entire early vote of the last midterm cycle, with Election Day still to come.

The early vote has outgrown the last midterm. More than 50.5 million Americans had cast early ballots by Saturday morning, according to the University of Florida Election Lab's tally — nearly 5 million more than the total number who voted early in the entire 2022 midterm cycle. A later Election Lab count, as of Saturday afternoon, put the figure at 51.31 million. Ballots have been arriving at roughly four million to five million a day.

Texas is one of the engines of the surge, as this station's Texas file has tracked county by county. In the subset of states that record party registration, the reported split so far is 10.7 million registered Democrats and 7.8 million registered Republicans among early voters — figures that describe who has participated, not how they voted, and that cover only the states that compile registration by party. The Election Lab's tally, by design, predicts no winner.

What the number does settle is the shape of Tuesday. Control of Congress will be decided by a midterm in which a third or more of the electorate has already voted before Election Day polls open — and in which the remaining Election Day vote, Dallas–Fort Worth's included, lands on top of the largest early-vote base a midterm has produced.
