Talarico and Hinojosa Brought the Final Push to Dallas: 'The Last Play of the Last Drive' (Dallas Watch News)

The closing argument came to Dallas in person. Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico and Democratic governor candidate Gina Hinojosa rallied supporters at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center, in a report from the event published Saturday, as both races entered their final days before Tuesday's election.

Talarico framed the finish in football terms for the home crowd. 'This is the last play of the last drive, Dallas,' he told supporters, according to the report. 'This is the moment we leave it all on the field.' Attendees interviewed at the rally said they had already cast ballots — unsurprising in a county where 603,255 people voted early — and described the choice in the Senate race in stark terms; their characterizations are their own, and this station reports the candidates' records rather than the crowd's adjectives.

Hinojosa's race runs on the same ballot: she challenges incumbent Gov. Greg Abbott, while Talarico's opponent is Attorney General Ken Paxton, in a Senate contest that has become the most expensive in the country. Dallas is not a backdrop in either race — Dallas County's early-vote total was the largest county haul in Texas this cycle on this station's count, and both campaigns have treated the Metroplex as ground that has to be worked in person, in the final weekend, in the rain that Tuesday's forecast promises.
