"We Need More From Him": Cowboys Coordinator Christian Parker Gets Blunt About $92 Million Cornerback DaRon Bland

Dallas's first-year defensive coordinator said it plainly about his highest-paid corner: the Cowboys need more from DaRon Bland. The numbers behind the remark are rough — an NFL-high 438 coverage yards surrendered, no interceptions, and a defense ranked last in the league.

"We Need More From Him": Cowboys Coordinator Christian Parker Gets Blunt About $92 Million Cornerback DaRon Bland (Dallas Watch News)

FRISCO — The Cowboys' defensive coordinator did not dress it up. "I think we need more from him. He knows that. We've got some good talks about that. I think he's battling," Christian Parker said of cornerback DaRon Bland, in comments reported by ESPN's Todd Archer and carried in Friday's coverage. Parker added the cornerback's defense of his player in the same breath: on a lot of snaps Bland has been close, the catches contested, and the job now is finishing those plays — at a position where, as Parker put it, 49 snaps can be right and one wrong one puts you in the spotlight.

The statistics explain why the question came. According to NFL Pro's figures as carried in the report, Bland has surrendered an NFL-high 438 yards in coverage and been credited with giving up three to four touchdowns, and quarterbacks targeting him are posting passer ratings between 117.4 and 124.6. Pro Football Focus grades him 43.1 overall, 91st of 102 qualified cornerbacks. And the ball production that made him — the breakout 2023 season — has vanished: no interception through the first half of 2026, a year after a career-best 73 tackles in 2025 earned him a four-year, $92 million contract signed in August 2025.

Bland's slump sits inside a unit-wide one: Dallas's defense ranks last in the league, allowing 385.4 yards per game, and the team is 3-5 heading into Sunday at Indianapolis. Parker, who arrived in January in his first defensive-coordinator job after developing Pat Surtain II in Denver, was hired in part as a cornerback developer — which is why his public candor about his most expensive corner is the story. Friday's final injury report is this desk's next Cowboys file; the defense's next exam is Sunday.
