John Washington III Calls for an Independent Citizens' Justice Review: 'Who Do the People Turn to for Justice?'

John Washington III is asking what happens when the officials accused of breaking the law are the same ones who decide whether a case moves — and he is proposing an independent authority, outside the institutions being challenged, to review credible evidence of official wrongdoing.

John Washington III Calls for an Independent Citizens' Justice Review: 'Who Do the People Turn to for Justice?' (Dallas Watch News)

John Washington III opened his message with a question he framed as the center of the issue. "What happens when the very people responsible for enforcing the law are the ones being accused of breaking it?" he wrote. When a citizen holds evidence of wrongdoing by a government official and a district attorney refuses to pursue the case, he asked, where does that citizen turn — who holds the district attorney accountable, who investigates the investigators, and who protects the people when the system refuses to act?

His answer is a new pathway that does not run through the institutions under challenge. "We need an independent pathway to justice that does not depend entirely on the approval of the same government institutions being challenged," he wrote. Under the proposal as he described it, the American people would have the legal right to present credible evidence of criminal wrongdoing to an independent authority, especially where conflicts of interest may exist, and that authority would be empowered to review complaints, investigate where warranted and pursue appropriate legal action while protecting everyone's constitutional rights.

"Justice should never depend on someone's political connections, government position, wealth, or influence," John Washington III wrote, arguing that government derives its authority from the people and that the justice system exists to serve the people, not to protect government officials from accountability. He called for what he described as a serious national conversation about establishing an independent citizens' justice review process, closing under the heading he gave the message: "Question the system. Demand accountability. Protect the rights of the people." He signed the message with his name and the line "2028 Presidential Candidate."
