Kyrie Irving Is Questionable for Tonight: the Mavericks' Best Player Is a Game-Day Decision Against the Kings

Kyrie Irving Is Questionable for Tonight: the Mavericks' Best Player Is a Game-Day Decision Against the Kings (Dallas Watch News)

The Mavericks' Monday night begins with a question the schedule cannot answer. Kyrie Irving is listed as questionable for tonight's game against the Sacramento Kings at American Airlines Center because of left knee injury management, according to the NBA's November 1 injury report — a designation that rules him neither in nor out, attached to the knee he tore on March 3, 2025, in a game against this same Sacramento team. He did not return to regular-season action until this season, and the report's wording matters: this is management of a comeback, not a newly identified injury.

The timing is what makes it a story. On Friday, Irving scored 35 points with nine assists and five 3-pointers in Dallas's 116-111 win over Houston, with Cooper Flagg adding 33 — 68 points between the two stars of a team that has now won three straight. And Dallas has been here before, recently: Irving carried the identical questionable listing, under the identical designation, before the October 28 game against Oklahoma City, and was subsequently cleared to play. That precedent cuts both ways — it shows the listing is part of how the Mavericks are handling his return, and it guarantees nothing about tonight. Monday's game also follows two full days without a game, a different circumstance from his October 24 absence against San Antonio on the second night of a back-to-back.

The rest of the report shapes what a night without him would look like. Sergio de Larrea, another backcourt option, is out with a right knee sprain; Tarik Biberovic is out with right heel bursitis, Dereck Lively II is out following surgery, and Santi Aldama is doubtful following right knee surgery, while Caleb Martin is available despite a right thumb sprain. Sacramento arrives winless at 0-6 with questions of its own — Zach LaVine questionable with right elbow inflammation, Dylan Cardwell questionable with a left calf strain, and Keegan Murray, Maxime Raynaud and Ben Simmons out — and with rookie Darius Acuff Jr., who scored 38 with nine 3-pointers in Saturday's loss at Memphis, as its counterweight to Flagg. Tipoff is 7 p.m. Central. Whether Irving joins it will be the last fact of Dallas's Monday, and the first one that matters.
