Deep Ellum Shootings: Four Dead, 15 Injured, Chief Says at Sunday News Conference (Dallas Watch News)

Four people were killed and 15 others were injured in the three shootings that tore through Deep Ellum in the first hours of Sunday, Dallas Police Chief Daniel C. Comeaux said at a Sunday morning news conference — the first full official accounting of a Halloween night the chief described as chaotic. The injured count, he cautioned, could increase, because some people were taken to hospitals in private vehicles rather than by ambulance.

The Dallas Police Department's own release fixes the three scenes and times: about 12:20 a.m. in the 2600 block of Elm Street, 1:05 a.m. in the 2600 block of Main Street, and 1:35 a.m. in the 200 block of South Crowdus Street. Among the 19 victims, the department said, four were pronounced deceased and 15 were injured and taken to local hospitals; no officers were injured. A fourth call, at about 3:30 a.m. along South Ervay Street, was outside the Deep Ellum district, NBC 5 reported. Police have not released the names of anyone killed or injured, and this story carries none.

Whether the three shootings are connected is the open question of the investigation. Comeaux said detectives are still working to determine whether the incidents are linked, that some people have been detained and are being interviewed, and that at least one person was arrested in connection with one of the incidents. The department's written release, for its part, states that the suspects remain outstanding at this time — the two statements together describe an investigation still sorting out who was involved in which scene. Police had already assigned extra officers to Deep Ellum because of the Halloween holiday, the chief said.

Comeaux asked anyone who was in Deep Ellum overnight and recorded video or took photographs to share that material with investigators. What led to the gunfire at any of the three scenes has not been released. This story will be updated as the department releases more information.
